Social enterprises

Social enterprises are known to be agents of change that use entrepreneurial means to contribute solutions to environmental and social challenges while seeking financial sustainability. While social enterprises awakened interest in academia a few decades ago, today our knowledge about the determinants of their formation, success, and subsistence is still very limited.

An example of a social enterprise is Arbio Peru. This is a Peruvian NGO, led by women, founded in Madre de Dios in 2010, dedicated to managing and caring for 916 hectares of the Amazonian forest, and which seeks to implement forest conservation actions by involving civil society and the private sector (Arbio Peru, 2023). As part of its financial sustainability, Arbio Peru has programs such as "Adopt a tree," "Protect the forest," and conservation expeditions.

Social enterprises, such as ArbioPeru, which provide environmental services, have great potential to join efforts in the face of the great challenge we face globally: mitigation and adaptation to climate change. We know that various efforts have been made to develop policies at the governmental level to address this challenge; however, little progress has been made and environmental problems persist. In particular, Latin America and the Caribbean need to multiply their efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The challenge is great; therefore, it requires a level of collective action never seen before. It is in this context that my project arises, which proposes to study the factors of generation and development of NGOs/social enterprises that offer or can offer environmental services in Peru, and that these in turn have great export potential, their contribution, and possible policies for their promotion.

Arboriza 21

Arboriza21 was born in 2014 to take action against the permanent environmental problem caused mainly by the industry sector that daily emits large amounts of carbon monoxide. The organization carries out forestation campaigns in Arequipa-Peru; holds conferences and has different agreements that seek to create environmental awareness. For example, Arboriza21 works together with Universidad Carolina San Pablo; and as strategic partners, its students can do their social internships with the NGO. The main objective of Arboriza21 is to plant trees in areas affected by human activities, natural disasters, and desert areas that can be transformed into green areas through tree planting. So far more than 20,000 native trees have been planted in different parts of Arequipa, always maintaining the characteristics of the area and improving the possibilities of both water and life in the area. Always in coordination with the local communities and authorities so that our projects reach a high level of success. Currently, in Arboriza21 we are looking to be financially sustainable to continue contributing to our planet. One of the projects is the Arboriza21 nursery, in which there will be facilities where people will be educated on how to earn money while contributing to the environment and workshops will be developed. In addition, based on the circular economy, we will seek to teach people with limited resources how to create their own compost, sell it and thus bring an income to their homes. Another project is the Arboriza21 research center, which will seek to rescue endangered species of flora and create species that can better combat climate change.
